Airbrush Tanning

Even, sun kissed glow without the harmful UV rays

Airbrush tanning became available in the past several years.

Its popularity is spreading, as more and more people opt to avoid the harmful UV rays outdoors.

If you've never tried it, but would like to, this page will provide you with some useful information before you give it a go.

Is it safe?

Yes! Airbrush tanning involves the use of self tanning products that contain dihydroxyacetone or DHA for short, which is the same active ingredient in the self tanners sold in the drug stores.

DHA is a simple, non toxic sugar compound that derives from the sugar cane. It reacts with the amino acids in the outermost, dead layer of the skin to produce color. It doesn't penetrate the skin any further than that, which makes it safe to use.

How does it work?

You can choose from two options:

A technician or a booth.

A technician will use a special sprayer to apply the self tanner onto your skin. Usually they will start with your feet and work their way up to your face. This process takes quite a bit longer than the booth, depending on the technician and their expertise.

Some people prefer this option as they think that the application is more even than in the booth. I say, it still depends on the skill of the technician. If you get somebody new and inexperienced you might not be happy with the results.

In the second option you step into a booth and put a shower cap on your hair. When you're ready, the sprays that move all around, will mist you with the self tanning solution. It takes only several seconds and you're done. Of course following the application you must make sure you're all dry before you get dressed, just like with the usual self tanner.

When you go for this option you have to keep few things in mind:

  • Close your eyes to avoid the product getting into them.

  • Hold your breath for the duration of the application. We don't really know if breathing in these products is harmful, but I would not take the chance! I am sure it's not beneficial.

  • Make sure you place the shower cap right at the hairline to avoid a straight line in the middle of your forehead!

How long does the tan last?

Anywhere from 4 to 7 days. The color will begin to fade as your top layer of skin sloughs off.

Tips

Exfoliate your skin and do not apply any cosmetic products before the application.

Your skin must be clean and dry for the products to work well.

The tanning salon will give you specific instructions when you make your appointment.
