Bunion
How to live with it....
Do you have a bunion that is making you crazy?
Unfortunately once you have it, it will not go away.
But there are ways to reduce your discomfort and pain.
Read on to find out how…
What is it?
From the outside of your foot,it looks like a bump on the side of the big toe.
From the inside, it is a progressive disorder of the bony framework of your foot. The big toe leans towards the second toe which in turn throws the bones out of alignment, producing the visible “bump”.
What causes it?
Bunions are usually caused by inherited biomechanical abnormality of the foot structure. That abnormality may be caused by certain structural foot conditions like flat feet, abnormal bone or ligament structure or neurological conditions.
Wearing shoes that crowd your toes will not cause a bunion to start, but it may worsen the existing deformity and cause the symptoms to show up sooner.
Symptoms
Most commonly reported symptoms of the affected area are:
- Soreness and pain
- Burning sensation
- Inflammation with redness
- Numbness
Treatment
Bunions will not go away and most often they get worse over time. The only way to remove one, is with a surgical procedure. However the surgery is only used if the pain is interfering with your daily life activities.
If your "bump" is not bothering you that much there are various conservative measures to ease your discomfort:
- Wear the right shoes. Chose only shoes that do not crowd your toes together and are flat. In another words say good-bye to pointy high heels!
- Modify your activity. Avoid doing things that aggravate your pain like standing for long periods of time.
- Use ice. Icing the affected area several times a day will help reduce the inflammation and soreness.
- Padding. Placing special pads over the area will cushion it and may reduce your discomfort. You can get specialty bunion pads from a drug store or ask your medical practitioner about them.
- Medication. Talk to your doctor about an anti-inflammatory medication to relieve your pain and inflammation.
- Orthotic devices. Ask your doctor about custom orthotic shoe wear to alleviate your discomfort.
