Epilator

For long lasting results

If you’re tired of temporary effects of shaving or messy waxing, then an epilator might be a perfect alternative for long lasting hair removal.

It will get rid of your hair at the root for smooth, hairless legs without any mess and in the comfort of your own home.

How does it work?

Handheld epilator has a special high speed tweezing mechanisms or spinning discs that grasp individual hairs and pluck them out.

All you have to do is glide the device in small circles, over the area you want to epilate.

Once the hair is pulled out at the root it usually takes a week or two to return, so you’ll have smooth, hairless legs for a while!

Does it hurt?

Yes! Imaging plucking a lot of hairs at the same time and it will give you an idea whether it will cause you discomfort. And it takes a lot longer than waxing or sugaring, so the pain lasts longer.

Of course pain is a very individual experience and some people have higher tolerance than others. But if you have low pain threshold than more than likely you will not be able to use an epilator.

To give yourself a little test, grab a pair of tweezers and pluck few hairs around the sensitive area of your ankles. Keep in mind the pain will be much worse with the epilator, as it plucks more than one hair at a time.

If you keep using the device, you will somewhat get used to the pain and it will become more tolerable.

Pros

  • If done properly, your hair will be gone for a week or two.

  • You can do it in the comfort of your own home.

  • Epilators are fairly inexpensive at around $50-$100

Cons

  • Apart from being painful, it’s also a fairly time consuming process, especially if it’s your first go.

  • It is a little awkward to remove the hair from the back of your legs. You have to twist and turn a lot.

  • I have tried several different epilators and none of them removed all of my hairs at one go. And some of the hairs don’t get pulled out but break at the skin surface. So inspect your legs closely after you’re done and if necessary pluck the remaining hairs with tweezers or use a razor.

  • You might get red bumps where the hair got pulled out. They do go away in a few hours up to couple of days, but that means you cannot epilate and go to the beach right after.

To avoid the red bumps read my “Tips” below.

Tips:

  • It is recommended to epilate after a shower. Your hairs will come out easier and with less pain.

The only problem I found with that is the epilator doesn’t glide on as easily on damp skin so make sure you wait till your skin is fully dry.

  • Do not apply lotions of any kind before the epilation.

  • Stretch your skin as much as possible during the process. This will help to prevent red bumps or bleeding caused by the skin being pulled up with the hair.

  • If your hair is longer than 5 mm, trim it with a shaver first, as the epilator might not grasp it with ease.

  • Once you’re done epilating and you want to prolong the results, I recommend trying hair inhibitors to slow down your hair re-growth.

  • Do not buy the cheapest ones on the market as they tend to be smaller and less powerful.
