Foot smell

Eliminate the odor

Is your foot smell causing you major embarrassment?

Let’s face it. Nobody enjoys the smell of stinky feet, despite the fact that it is quite a common occurrence.

But if the smell gets so bad that you are embarrassed to take off your shoes at a friend’s house, then it’s definitely time to do something about it.

What causes foot smell?

Your feet are literally covered with thousands of sweat glands which produce a lot of sweat on a daily basis.

On top of that you have bacteria that live on the soles of your feet. They love moist, warm and dark environment that is created when your feet are stuffed in socks and shoes with no breathing room. It helps them to grow, multiply and release the “smelly” gases that produce the offensive and embarrassing foot odor.

As a matter of fact, those bacteria produce stinky gases very similar to the ones that are emitted by the bacteria used to produce cheeses. So no wonder that stinky feet can smell like good old feta cheese.

What can be done to prevent and eliminate the foot smell?

First you must eliminate the warm, dark and moist condition to discourage the bacteria from thriving in your tootsies. Here’s how:

  • Wash your feet twice a day with antibacterial soap

  • Do not apply moisturizing lotion to your feet

  • Wear only shoes that “breathe” meaning they are made from natural fabrics like leather or cotton. Plastic or plether are bad news as they will not let your feet breathe and will promote excessive sweating.

  • Allow your shoes to dry out for about 24 hrs before wearing them again.

  • Do not wear shoes if you do not have to. Let your feet air out and relax as much as possible.

  • Do not wear synthetic socks. Stick to cotton ones.

  • Sprinkle your feet lightly with special foot powder or baking soda to absorb excessive moisture.

  • Apply foot spray, antiperspirant or foot deodorant with zinc oxide to reduce sweating.

  • Folk medicine advises to soak your feet in regular tea. The tannic acid in tea acts as astringent and will reduce sweating.

Boil enough water to submerge your feet in, put 4 or 5 teabags in and wait till it cools down, then soak your feet for about half an hour.

Sometimes nothing will help as the bacteria overgrow. In that case you will need to head to your doctor and ask him/her for advice. On some occasions they will prescribe topical antibiotics to kill the bacteria.
