Ingrown Hair Removal

It starts with prevention

Instead of dealing with the ingrown hair removal, you should prevent this annoying condition from appearing in the first place.

Unfortunately the best ingrown hair prevention is to stop removing your leg hair altogether.

Yes, I know… In today’s Western World this is not an option, so below you will find other helpful hints that will ease your ingrown hair problems.

  • Shave in the direction of the hair growth. We tend to shave our legs from ankle up to the knee which is against the grain. This increases our chances of the pesky ingrowns. To prevent them, start shaving down your leg, from the knee to the ankle.

  • Forget a close shave. We all want the closest shave possible, but ironically this can cause the ingrown hair to appear. When we use a razor with more than one blade, the second blade cuts the hair below the skin’s surface. This can cause the damage to the follicle and/or the hair will curl under and grow into the skin. To prevent that, use a single blade razor.

  • Do not wax. Waxing is traumatic as it removes your hair at an angle and when that same hair is growing back, it does that at the same angle that it was removed, instead of straight up. This often causes the hair to go into the side of the follicle instead of going to the opening on the surface of your skin. The same principle applies to sugaring and any other kind of hair removal that involves ripping your hair out at the root.

  • Never shave your legs when they are dry. Make sure you always moisten your hair with water and some sort of shaving cream and leave it on for couple of minutes before you reach for the razor.

  • Allow your hair to grow longer before any kind of hair removal. This will allow your hair time to grow out of their follicles properly.

  • Exfoliate your skin on regular basis. This will remove dry scaly skin that might otherwise plug up the follicle’s opening and force the hair to grow into the skin.

  • Use depilatories. These chemical lotions dissolve hair just under skin’s surface. The hair is not broken or bluntly cut off which reduces chances of ingrown hair. The problem with this hair removal is that depilatories can cause a skin reaction or sensitivity, plus they don’t smell very nice and cannot be used on regular basis.

Find the best hair removal method for you. We are all different, have different skin and hair and what works for you might not work for your best friend. Experiment with different hair removal methods and find one that leaves you with least ingrown hair.
