Ingrown Hair Treatment

Win the hairy battle

Are the razor bumps on your legs making you look for an ingrown hair treatment?

If that’s the case, read on and hopefully this page will help you win the hairy battle.

Most ingrown hairs straighten up on their own within a week or two, but if they don’t or if you are not willing to wait that long there are ways to help them out a little.

The first ingrown hair treatment option is plucking the hair out. Make sure the ingrown hair is clearly visible, before you go fishing for it. If you can’t see it, then wait a day or two to make sure that there is an actual hair in there and not just a pimple.

You will need a pair of sharp, pointy tweezers or if those are not at hand, you can use a pin or a needle.

  • First apply a warm, damp compress to the area you will treat. A face cloth or towel and warm water will do the trick. Leave it on for few minutes to soften your skin.

  • Use an antiseptic like rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to sterilize the tweezers or needle as well as the area where the ingrown hair appeared.

  • Gently insert the tweezers or the needle into the skin and pluck the hair out. Wipe the area with the antiseptic when you’re finished plucking.

This option is not always recommended by the experts as it can cause infection or scarring. Also if you suffer from a lot of ingrown hairs, it can take for ever to remove them all.

If you’re not comfortable with the above treatment, you can speed up the healing and inflammation of ingrown hair by using antibacterial soap with 10% benzyl peroxide twice a day. Follow by applying over the counter hydrocortisone cream on the bumps only.

Ask your local pharmacist for advice when buying hydrocortisone cream or talk to your doctor and always follow the application instructions on the product! Keep in mind that prolonged use of hydrocortisone cream can lead to thinning of the skin.

Another option is to use products specifically developed to cure ingrown hair. If that’s something that interests you read about it here.

Or you can learn how to make your own hair removal product here.

And let’s not forget that the best treatment is not to let those pesky hairs bury their heads in our skin. Read all about the prevention here.
