Restless Leg Syndrome in Pregnancy


Can you stop your feet from dancing all night?



According to some expert studies, restless leg syndrome in pregnancy affects about 25 % of pregnant women.

I have experienced it in both of my pregnancies and I can assure you, that for me it was one of the most annoying side effects of being pregnant.




What is Restless Leg Syndrome?

This annoying condition usually appears towards the end of pregnancy, more often in the third trimester. On average it will last about 4 months and it will disappear after the delivery.

The main symptom is the desire to move your feet when you are at rest, especially in the evening and when you’re trying to sleep. It almost feels like your feet want to dance against your will.




Possible causes of Restless Leg Syndrome in Pregnancy

Nobody is really sure what causes this annoying condition, but some experts relate it to iron deficiency that results in decreased hemoglobin.




Will it go away?

Yes, more than likely. If you have never suffered from this condition before, you can expect it to go away within a month or sooner after the delivery. In my case the symptoms went away within couple of days, despite the fact that my hemoglobin was low due to excessive bleeding during and post the delivery.




What can you do

Unfortunately there is not too much you can do to relieve the annoying symptoms and you might just have to learn to live with them, but before you do:

  • ask your doctor to check your blood for iron deficiency anemia,

  • look into alternative medicine on advice of your doctor, as some women report improvement with acupuncture, yoga or meditation.
