Sugaring Hair Removal

An ancient Egyptian hair removal method

If you're looking for smooth, hairless legs for 3-6 weeks, then sugaring hair removal is something, you might want to try.

It is a great alternative to waxing. With this method, a paste of mainly sugar is applied to the hair, and with cloth strips, the hair is pulled out at the root.

If you have sensitive skin, then sugaring hair removal might be a better choice than waxing. The sugar paste only adheres to your hair and not the skin, so it will not cause skin irritation like waxing can.

How is it done?

You have an option of either:

  • heading to your favorite salon and having it done for $50-$60 for both legs

    or

  • you can do it on your own in the comfort of your home with a home sugaring kit or your own sugar concoction.

If you choose to give it a try on your own...

Follow these basics steps:

  • Make sure your hair is long enough- at least 1/8 inch

  • The sugar mixture has to be warm and spreadable, but not too hot! You don't want to burn yourself. Test it on a small portion of your skin before applying a thick layer.

  • Spread a thick layer on the skin, with a special spreader or tongue depressor. It will harden very quickly so put just enough for one strip at the time

  • Immediately apply cloth strip and smooth it in the direction of your hair growth.

  • Hold one end of the strip firmly, and very quickly pull the other end off, in the opposite direction of your hair growth. Yes, now is the time to scream...

  • Voila! Hairless legs!

A good friend of mine gave me a recipe to make your own sugar paste. I have used it several times, and it works well if you follow the directions. First time I made it, I added too much sugar and it was too thick. On another occasion I put in on when it was slightly too hot. OUCH!

Sugaring Home Recipe

2 C sugar

1/4 C lemon juice

1/4 C water

Combine all of the above in a saucepan.

Stir it constantly over medium- low heat until sugar turns deep brown(around 35-40 minutes). When ready, pour it into a thick plastic container. Let it cool down until warm, and spreads easy. If it cools down too much, you can put it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds.

Again, make sure it is not too hot before you apply it to the skin.

Special Tip

Avoid sugaring when you have your period. You are extra sensitive to pain, at that time of the month.

Warning

If you decide to try sugaring hair removal method, I would like to warn you ladies, that it can get quite messy!

The first time I have ever done it, I had the sugar paste all over my bathroom counter, as well as my jeans and hair!

Needless to say, I wasn't able to remove it from my hair (on my head) so I had to cut a chunk out. Thank God it was just a little chunk. LOL

So proceed with caution!
