Tanning Lotions

Safe alternative for a golden tan

Tanning lotions are the only safe alternative for a golden tan.

More and more people choose this option, as our ozone layer is getting thinner and sun bathing is becaming more and more unsafe.

Even the stars in Hollywood are known to avoid the real sun and opt for the "Sun in the Bottle".

Here we share basics rules for proper application of the products to avoid uneven color and ugly streaks.

What are Tanning Lotions?

All self tanners contain 2-5 % of an active ingredient dihydroxyacetone, or DHA for short.

DHA is a simple, non toxic sugar compound that derives from the sugar cane.

It reacts with the amino acids in the outermost, dead layer of the skin to produce color.

It doesn’t penetrate the skin any further than that, which makes it safe to use.

Guidelines for Application

To ensure you have a nice, even tan, make sure you follow the basic rules before you apply the self tanning lotion.

  1. Exfoliate with a body scrub or a loofah in the shower. That will get rid of the dead skin cells that are ready to slough off. If you do not exfoliate, these dead skin cells will slough off along with the color, creating uneven tan. Yuck!

  2. Apply a thin layer of light weight moisturizer to help the self tanner glide on easier, especially on the elbows, knees and ankles.

  3. Wait till your skin is completely dry to avoid streaks.

  4. Apply the self tanner the same way you would your moisturizer. Spread it evenly, in circular motion over the area you want tanned.

  5. Wash your hands right after the application or your palms will turn brown. Alternately you can use thin rubber gloves for the application to avoid palm stains.

  6. Wait at least 15-30 minutes before you get dressed or do anything that involves touching your skin. You do not want smudges, do you?

The color will develop within few hours, depending on the product you’re using. Re-apply it according to the specific product directions to develop the desired shade of golden brown.

Things to keep in mind

  • If you’re very pale do not go for the dark shade unless you’re getting ready for the Halloween party! Get the lightest shade if you want to look natural.

  • If you overdo it with the color, the only thing you can do is to exfoliate and hope the color will lighten up. Alternatively you can hide in your room for a few days or just hope people will not notice.

  • Do not apply the self tanner to just one area of your body. It looks silly when your legs are brown, but the rest of you is white as a ghost!

  • If you stain the palms of your hands, try removing them with rubbing alcohol.
