Tanning
Add some color to your legs
Nowadays tanning is not supposed to be in style, because of the health risks attached.
But if you're as white as I am, you know well that in our culture many people believe that legs look much better when they have a nice golden glow.
I personally hate putting on a skirt or shorts when my legs are their whitest.
Once upon a time sun tanning was socially unacceptable and white skin was considered beautiful. I think this trend will re-emerge in the future as the ozone layer is getting thinner and tanning is getting more and more unhealthy.
But in the meantime we still like to get brown and we have many choices. This page will explore the most popular options for a tan.
But before we get to our options let's refresh our memories on how our skin tans.
How We Tan
Our skin will darken when there is an increase of the pigment melanin into the skin's cells after exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
Melanin's job is to protect our bodies from absorbing too much solar radiation.
There are two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. Both, in excess, are responsible for skin damage, premature aging and various forms of cancers. All sunscreens on the market protect us completely from UVB rays, but unfortunately few protect us from UVA rays.
Our Options
We will start with (still the most popular) suntanning. Despite being labeled and proven as unhealthy, many people still worship it and spend many hours bathing in the hot sun.

What if you want to tan in the middle of the winter? Well...You could go to Mexico or another tropical destination, but if you don't have that option, you can hit the good old "fake and bake" booth.

But that's not the only option for a sunless tan. You can also opt for airbrush tan, or sunless lotion.
