Weight Loss Tips

My healthy eating rules

The weight loss tips on this page are also my rules for healthy eating.

They helped me to achieve my healthy weight and keep me energised and healthy.

I hope they will do the same for you.

Eat unprocessed, clean foods.

Healthy lifestyle choices mean that you have to do your best to avoid processed foods and stick to fresh as much as possible.

When foods are processed, the nutrients are lost and artificial additives are added for color, flavour and increased shelf life. The artificial additives are essentially toxic to our bodies and lead to many health problems like poor fat metabolism, premature aging and damage of blood vessels just to name a few.

If you’re not sure if the food is good for you, look at the label. The more ingredients on the list, the more chances that the food is not good. And if you notice “artificial color and flavour” on that list, then put it back on the shelf and move on.

Include protein, carbs and fat in every meal.

For a balanced meal include protein, carbohydrate and fat at every meal. Each of the above nutrients plays an important part in the body’s nutrition and should not be avoided. This will also keep your blood sugars steady throughout the day and prevent spikes that cause your body to store fat.

Eat small meals 5-7 times per day (approx. every 3 hrs.)

Eating frequently throughout the day will keep your energy levels consistent, keep your satisfied but never stuffed and most of all it will speed up your metabolism.

You will need to find out your daily calorie requirement and divide it into 5-7 meals. We go into more details about this later.

Plan your meals ahead of time

Plan your menu for the week ahead, then make a trip to the supermarket. Make sure you are not hungry when you shop and do not buy any junk food. If you don’t have any In the cupboards you will avoid the temptation.

Keep a record of what you eat

This will help you to assess your progress and see where you need to improve. You can invest in a diet journal or go online to www.fitday.com which is a great free service that I use.

Do not starve yourself.

Another thing to remember is not to starve yourself. If your body gets very little calories per day, it will go into a starvation mode and it will hold on to the stored fat for dear life.

Totally NOT what you want! For that reason you should never eat less than 1200 calories per day and preferably keep it over 1500.

Treat yourself

The more you restrict yourself from eating your favourite foods, the more you will want them. For that reason you should allow yourself to have a small treat every now and then. Just be conscious of the size or the amount.

I, for example, love ice cream so I allow myself a small bowl of vanilla frozen yogurt couple times a week. I also have a 23 calorie cookie every day with my last meal.

Another thing I do is I allow myself to have one “cheat meal” per week. It is usually when we get together with friends and order a pizza or have some burgers at the restaurant. But even then I learned to make better choices.

For example I will have a burger but order a salad instead of fries. Or I will have a couple of slices of pizza but I will make sure that it is on whole wheat thin crust with lots of healthy toppings. Plus I will have a salad on the side.
